How to get links to your website
Wednesday, 3 September 2008
Links to your website are the most important thing you can have; the more links the better! I have seen websites with hundreds even thousands of links to their website
I don’t suggest you try for that many... an extra 3 or 4 new links a month is all that's needed.
Many places you apply to will be used of getting link requests, (I get about 50-100 a day that I just delete, as they are impersonal and the person requesting a link has obviously used a program to find your links page and never even visited your site) and will respond quickly to a link exchange request.
The process I suggest will take longer but get great results! And results are what it’s all about.
First: go to Google and do a search for Links and then add the type of website you have. EG: Links fly fishing, or
Links page fly fishing
Second: visit the site, have a look around and find something personal to comment on. For instance on a website called www.bishforfish.co.nz he has a rather cool quote program, in your email requesting a link exchange, comment on something like that so the person you are writing will know immediately that you have actually been to their website and are interested in something you saw on that site.
Subject line of email: don't use the word Link, most people have email message rules that delete link requests, especially the good sites.
Write something like
Subject: Comment about your website.
Sample email:
Hi Tony (Find out the person’s name is you can)
I visited your site today, that 650+ quote program you have is very cool, I spent ages trying different numbers out. And that Marlin in the banner is a great looking specimen. (This tells him you have actually been t his site.
I have a site called www.saltflyer.com a website about saltwater fly fishing in New Zealand. I would very much like to ask if you would be interested in exchanging links, if so, then send your link details, and I will add them to my site.
Yours Nik
Leave it at that. Either they will write back or they won’t.
But while at their website, have a look at the way their links page is laid out, some people like long descriptions, some people like us prefer just keywords, linking that's words to you site.... this technique of using keywords as the link, is by far, more search engine friendly by the way.
If the website owner writes back, then do what you said you would; add their link to your site then send back your link information the way you would like your link to appear.
